KODAK COLOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1, Aldus PhotoStyler, and several other graphics applications, have Kodak╒s Color Management System integrated into the application. KCMS utilizes Device Color Profiles that account for the color characteristics of certain devices to produce consistent color from image source to monitor to print output.
THE DIGITAL STOCK KCMS COLOR PROFILE: Eastman Kodak has developed a special "Digital Stock KCMS Color Profile" that is precisely matched to Digital Stock images. When you use this Color Profile with Digital Stock images and a graphics program that incorporates KCMS (like Adobe Photoshop, Aldus PhotoStyler, and others), you can be confident of achieving consistent color and superb printing results. Please note that the Digital Stock Color Profile is intended for use with Digital Stock images ONLY.
INSTALLATION: To install the Digital Stock Color Profile, simply drag the item called "ds_pcd01.pt" from the folder called "Put Contents in KPCMS Folder" and put it in the KPCMS folder that is in your System Folder. The KPCMS folder was created by Photoshop or the other graphics program you use. If you don't have it, either you are not using a program that employs KCMS or KCMS was not installed properly.
USING THE COLOR PROFILE: To use KCMS in Photoshop 2.5.1 or later, select ╥Open As╙ from the ╥File╙ menu. Go to the Desktop and select the Photo CD device (it will be called PCD####). In the ╥Format╙ box, choose ╥Kodak CMS Photo CD.╙ Open the Photo CD device file and select ╥Photo CD.╙ From the choices you are offered, select ╥Images╙ and open the image you want. This will bring up another dialog box. Under ╥Source,╙ select "Kodak CMS Digital Stock Photo CD." Under ╥Destination,╙ choose the color space or specific device appropriate for your intended use (see paragraph below). Click ╥OK.╙ Select the resolution you want, click ╥OK╙ and your image will open.
OTHER DEVICE COLOR PROFILES: The Digital Stock Color Profile takes care of the "Source" portion of KCMS, but the "Destination" description is equally important. In Photoshop, for instance, the standard Destination choices are either RGB or LAB color spaces. Photoshop will not open a Photo CD image directly into CMYK, and, unfortunately, conversion of an image from a different color space into CMYK degrades the image. To get the best print results, we strongly recommend that you obtain Kodak╒s direct YCC to CMYK Device Color Profiles. Aldus PhotoStyler comes with some of these Profiles, but Photoshop and other programs do not. The basic YCC to CMYK CMS Profiles are available from Kodak as part of Kodak's Precision Color Management System Starter Pack [800/752-6567] or from DayStar Digital as part of DayStar's ColorMatch system [800/962-2077]. We have found that using the Digital Stock Color Profile with the Kodak SWOP Proofer CMYK-Coated Stock Profile (or the Uncoated Stock Profile, if you╒re going to a Web Press) is perfect for high-end pre-press applications.
